GDPR: Industry-specific guidelines for the transport industry

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) poses major challenges for transport companies: new regulations for the handling of personal data, sensitive data and GPS records are being introduced.

For this purpose, the Federal Transport Division in the Austrian Economic Chamber has developed sector-specific guidelines, which will be made available to its members this week. They should help to do the last homework before the GDPR becomes effective on May 24th.

The requirements which the GDPR imposes on the individual companies are not the same in every industry. For example, data protection law makes it difficult to process data in the context of a rescue service for a cable car because health data – and thus a particularly protected category of data – are also affected. Similarly, in the freight transport industry sector-specific directories are needed when it comes to the use of digital control equipment or the use of certain software solutions in construction site traffic.

“Our industry-specific guidelines describe how to deal with such data very practically. We can not relieve our companies of the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation, but we want to support them in the best possible way,” said Alexander Klacska, Chairman of the Federal Transport Division.
